MBTA Green Line Extension Public Artists Exhibition
Past Exhibition Dates: June 9 - July 28, 2022
In 2014, the MBTA began the selection of artists to create public art for seven new stations for the Green Line extension through Cambridge, Somerville, and Medford.
The GLX Integral Art Program incorporated art into the design of the stations rather than as add-ons or afterthoughts. The intent was to humanize the environment and uniqueness of each station experienced by the ridership and various communities.
Curated by Christine Vaillancourt, the exhibition features the Artists’ concepts over the duration of the project. In addition, artists will juxtapose their concepts with one or two pieces of artwork not related to their installations.
Artists featured in the show:
Randal Thurston - Lechmere Station
Matthew Trimble & Matthew Culver - Union Square Station
Nader Tehrani & Arthur Chang - East Somerville Station
Aaron T Stephan - Magoun Square Station
Christine Vaillancourt - Ball Square Station
Nancy Selvage - Medford/Tufts Station
Each artists worked closely over the years with a team of MBTA/GLX architects and engineers to realize their individual concepts. The integrated public art that visitors will experience includes glass art on elevator towers, a sculptural additions, and porcelain enamel steel panels on each platform.
All Green Line extension stations are expected to be open later this year, with the Union Square branch now open!
